The race for champion region is wide open at the close of play on the opening day of the Junior State Championships at Whites Hill Sports Complex.

Across the six divisions, there are a number of teams locked in a battle for top spot on the ladder, having played two games each on the first day of the tournament.

In the Under 12 Girls, the CQ Bulls and Brisbane Cobras won their respective games convincingly, while in the Under 12 Boys, the Bulls are outright leaders after wins over the Sunshine Coast Pineapples and SQBD Sharks.

Host region Cobras share top position on the ladder with the SWQ Swans in the Under 14 Girls, while the Bulls are continuing their strong form in the Under 14 Boys, undefeated along with the Sharks.

In the Under 16 Girls division, the Bulls scored 20 tries in two games to sit atop the ladder, on equal points with the Sharks.

Play resumes on Day 2 at 8.30am.
