After two epic days of competition, the champions of the 2024 Queensland Touch Football Bundaberg Cup have been crowned in central Queensland.
The Bundaberg Cup is a social knockout Touch Football tournament in Bundaberg offering a share of a prize pool of $20000.
Home side Bundaberg Under 12 Boys managed to get a win in front of their supporters, 4-2 in the final against Gladstone.
“We scored two tries on the wing and two in the middle. We feel great and we’re excited,” said Bundaberg’s Sonny Halford.
“I’ve played at the Bundy Cup for three years now – I love scoring tries and I love helping my friends to score tries,” he said.
Benchwarmers Social Women, also from Bundaberg, got a win on Sunday, beating Weekes Property Co 6-3 in the final.
“We’ve been trying for a few years so it feels pretty good to get a win finally,” said Benchwarmers’ Holly Stone.
“We’re all from Bundy, so we’ve been playing here since we were Under 12s. This is such a fun competition, it’s not as serious and we all have a fun time,” she said.
The Social Men’s Final was a close fought game, with Rockhampton’s Bulldogs claiming a narrow 5-4 win over QNZLDER.
“It was a good win, but a tough win…we started pretty strong and fell into a little bit of lull just before half time. We found a way to dig in and ended up getting the result which is fantastic,” said Bulldogs’ Mitchell Smith.
“We’re just a Masters team from back home in Rockhampton, and we had a couple of the young boys join us to give us some legs.
“We won it two years ago, and lost the semi last year. We love coming here to represent our club, and the people that have come before us,” he said.
In the Social Mixed Final, Ankles Bullies scored five tries to beat It’s just touch 5-3.
“It was a good match, hard fought. It was back and forth the whole time, and a really tough game,” said Ankle Bullies Cooper Mortensen.
“We’re stoked and excited to have won. We love playing touch, and this is a great carnival,” he said.
